Sarah Imenu & Chayei Sarah

Proverbs 31:10 Who can find a capable wife? Her value is far beyond that of pearls.

A ‘BISSEL’ OF TORAH Parashat Chayei Sarah (Genesis 23:1 – 25:18)

As Avraham is our father, Sarah is our mother, Sarah Imenu.  This week’s parsha is called Chayei Sarah/ the life of Sarah.  Yet, it begins with Sarah’s death.

Sarah’s life is seen and witnessed in the legacy that she left behind. Not only was Sarah of great beauty, but she was a woman of faith also.

Hebrews 11:11 By trusting, he received potency to father a child, even when he was past the age for it, as was Sarah herself; because he regarded the One who had made the promise as trustworthy.

By faith, Abraham obeyed by going out of Ur without knowing exactly where he was going. Sarah is not mentioned, but her faith is there along with Avraham’s .  She is truly an example to behold to blindly trust and believe in the faith of her husband. As hard as it had to have been on Avraham, it was probably much harder on a woman.  The journey would be difficult and arduous.  A woman whose responsibility was to help keep up the home must have found it difficult to be constantly packing up moving along encountering many struggles along the way.

When they entered the Land of Canaan, it was not all roses and chocolates.  There was a famine in the land and Avraham decided to go to Mitzrayim/Egypt. He decided to use the advantage of his wife’s great beauty.

Genesis 12:11 When he came close to Egypt and was about to enter, he said to Sarai his wife, “Here now, I know that you are a good-looking woman; 12 so that when the Egyptians see you, they will say, ‘This is his wife,’ and kill me but keep you alive.

It was a tribute to Sarah’s beauty that even at the age of 65, she was still so irresistible.  It was not only in Avraham’s eye, but others also.

Genesis 12:14 When Avram entered Egypt, the Egyptians did notice that the woman was very beautiful.

I believe that beauty is not only in looks. I firmly believe that attitude, personality and your values are all a part of one’s beauty.  Beauty is not only skin deep, it actually goes much deeper.  It is about those things that you can leave behind…your values, attitudes about life and examples of your personality.  This is what I believe that Chayei Sarah is setting up for women.  An example of beauty that goes beyond the outer shell.

So as a woman, let us take from Sarah’s example and be a beautiful woman inside and out. Be aware of what you are leaving behind as a picture of your life!
